About

Welcome to Sociology in the Books!  This is the sister site of Sociology in the Media.

About Me:

My name is Rachel Ridnor and I am a sociology professor at Saddleback College and Orange Coast College.  Every day I go to work, I feel like I won the lottery, because teaching brings such joy to my life.  After all the years I have been teaching, I still say to myself each day, I cannot believe I am paid to do this :).

Purpose of the Site:

We live in a media driven society, and the influence of media only increases with time.  As a sociology professor, I love this increase and I am excited to continue to apply media that is relevant to my students to sociology.

One way I would like to do this outside of my classroom, which integrates a lot of modern media to sociological concepts, is through this site.  The purpose of this site is to enrich the study of sociology, from a student’s perspective, by providing a variety of media resources and showing how they relate to sociology.

More importantly, I simply want to show that using media with sociology is fun.  A common stereotype about the presentation of academic subjects using media is the use of dry readings and boring, outdated, films.  Reading sociological books can be fun.

This site will feature books, in an effort to show how applicable sociology is to everyday life.  Also, make sure to check out the general sociology in media site, which focuses on visual media at http://sociologyinthemedia.wordpress.com/

Special Thanks:

This project would not be possible without the contributions of my amazing students.  My students have suggested many of the books that I will be posting on this site.  I learn so much from my students and it is my pleasure to share the fantastic books that they have suggested, in addition to the media I found on my own.

I also want to thank ahead of time my current students who want to contribute to this ongoing project.
